A Conversation with Luis Barragan

Luis Barragán, the preeminent Mexican architect, was very sparing of any written formulations of his ideas. In this insightful interview conducted by Alejandro Ramírez Ugarte in 1962, Barragán offers an account of his career, his travels, and some of his main esthetic and architectural concerns. Hence the crucial importance of this document, published here for the first time. It is accompanied by two fundamental and complementary texts: the only lecture the architect ever delivered and the illuminating acceptance speech he gave upon receiving the Pritzker Prize. This trio of documents forms a small corpus that goes to the heart of Barragán’s vision. A definitive body of work, serviceable and open to a range of different readings.
